Ohhh fruity!

If like me you’re a huge fruit fan that loves making juice and smoothie combos, you are in luck.

Whether you are into dehydrating or freezing your fruit now is the perfect time to stock up.

Before fruit hits the stores it is picked, packaged and shipped. Sometimes this is a day, sometimes more.

When the fruit is delivered it is done so in chiller lorries who’ve a temperature of between -5 and 5 degrees.

As soon as it hits the stores chilled foods are put out asap.

Produce is normally worked last whilst fresh meat is done first.

Why is this good for us?

Right now it is the middle of winter, stores are cold, warehouses literally freezing (I know!)

With items such a cherries now coming back to store, its time to get stocked up.

During the summer fruits perish extremely quickly in the heat whether they are refrigerated or not. Warehouses become heat traps (again, I know!) But also fridges start to breakdown during the hotter weather.

More often than not people won’t buy reduced fruits and veg, because of the use by / sell by / best before dates.

Let me explain them

Use by…

Sell by…

Best before…

When items are reduced it is because of the date marked on them.

However because right now it is the middle of winter these reduced items that are delivered chilled,  stored and presented chilled are lasting just long enough, with no sign of perishing for you to buy them at the reduced price, so that you can get them home to prep and store.

WinWin I say, stock yourself up and save pennies in the long run.

Not only that but during the warmer months prices rise, availability is poorer and they aren’t as appealing.

So go on get in there!

Foodie

One thing I can safely say about me is I am a foodie, I love food but sadly it doesn’t love me (sad face)

As much as I would love to be able to throw meals together its like a quantum physics to me, scratches head, but what I do like to do is bake.

One christmas i made peppermint creams, mincepies, a yule log, fudge, milk biscuits and ginger biscuits and iced each, a hogmanay pie, it was enough to last ages, plus I gave two colleagues of mine platters and both my sisters items too

Now though things are changing and I am on a journey into FREE FROM

Free from dairy

Free from gluten

and free from fat at least

What does that mean?

Essentially that means my diet is to include a lot of fruit and veg, meatfree, but some meat included, egg included and do not fret cakes are allowed as long as I can convert them to free from.

I am actually looking forward to this journey of discovery because I am also finding out what my body reacts to and how as well as what i am capable of and lastly whether I can heal myself by eating a more natural based diet.

Today I made a free from, dairy free, gluten free fruit cake that seems to have turned out perfect.

I also made apple sauce which I am looking forward to using in different ways.

I also made my mum a lemon drizzle cake so she had something too.

Recipe – Quinoa Strawberry Salad

Today I bought some Quinoa, one of those do I / don’t I grains. Well I did, in fact I went one better and bought 2 bags on BOGOF.

Risky? Heck yes but I went there anyway determined to give it a decent go.

Given this recipe is the first where I’ve used Quinoa and I’ve never had it before so didn’t have a clue what to put it with I was highly impressed by both the product and my recipe and thats something for someone more of a baker than texture and flavour goddess.

So here is my yummy recipe I hope you like it as much as I did.

Homegrown red and green lettuce freshly picked and washed

1/5 Cucumber chopped

1/4 Carrot grated

4 Strawberries cut into 8 pieces

1/2 tsp Chia seeds

2-3 tbsp Quinoa cooked

Apple sauce salad dressing

1 tsp Pumpkin seeds

Recipe – Pick Me Ups

Ingredients

4 tbsp dessicated coconut

5-6 tbsp honey the thicker the better

2-3 tsp coconut oil melted

4 1/2 tbsp toasted oats

1 tbsp cacoa nibs

1 tsp chia seeds

Method

1. Toast oats then put in a mixing bowl

2. Add cacao nibs, dessicated coconut, chia seeds.

3. Melt coconut oil approx 30 seconds in microwave or leave out a few hours to turn to liquid.

4 Add half the honey to the oil and mix well before pouring into dry ingredients and mixing again.

5. Add remainder of honey and mix again then pour out onto a small tray.

6. Put in the fridge for 15-20mins

7. Remove from fridge and start carefully shaping balls from the mix.

Place back in the fridge for 20 mins. They won’t be perfect!

8 Again remove from the fridge and carefully turn each ball over.

9. After 20mins remove tray and place the PickMeUps into a container to store in the fridge.

Note

I call these PickMeUps for two reasons, the first being obviously they are nibbles the second is because they are just so darn difficult to actually pick up whilst making them lol

21 signs your body could be fighting what you put in it and on it

The following list has been put together from experience over the years.

When you sit back and actually think about all the unnameable ingredients and chemicals that go into products these days it is no wonder that our bodies are starting to fight back, trying desperately to make us take note and change what we use.

You may think in this hot weather a nice cold milkshake from any company will suffice and your only worry is brain-freeze but if like me you end up spending the rest of the day laid up with stomach cramps then perhaps the milkshake is not worth it. It could be that dairy is not your friend and you can check this by cutting it out of your diet completely for a week and switching to soya, almond or lacto-free products.

Just recently within the last 3 weeks I’ve had to change my shower gel to a zero pH level, apparently my skin couldn’t handle everyday shower gel I’d get flare ups on my back that would itch even hours after using it. Gladly now I have switched I am not reacting at all.

In fact if you notice any of the following examples then playing the trial and error game it may take time but it is going to save you doctors visits, medical bills and such.

About 5 years ago now I visited a restaurant with someone and approximately four hours later my body was beginning to show signs of an allergic reaction in the form of itching on the backs of my hands and feet and my thighs. It got so intense I was kept awake and would try anything to stop the pain eventually I had to get the doctor to provide me with a cream which worked within days clearing it up.

A few years ago I had an allergy test that I purchased through an independent company. OK so I got a book about vitamins and minerals which was awesome and a list of allergies. The only problem was some I had no clue what they were, they didn’t Google and I had no idea what they were in.

So, please if you notice any of the following on yourself, a loved one or child consider changing up your products before they get more serious.

Itchy skin or scalp

Sickness / Illness

Rashes

Weight loss / gain

Bloating

Diarrhoea

Constipation

Dry skin

Peeling skin

Warm skin patches

Skin breakouts

Dry hair

Poor eyesight

Tiredness

Increased Stress

Short temper

Stomach Cramps

Increased Sweating

Tiny Blisters

An increase in water

Poor Breathing

Even dust, and pets can cause allergies causing asthma!

Allergies if not treated or averted can become quite serious, if they persist they can affect the sufferers life in more ways than one. At worst they could become recluse and hide from the world not living their life completely. Their loved ones will find it difficult to understand them and there day to day fight, the difficulty and stress it places on them every single day.

Pay close attention to what reactions you get and when, what you have used, touched or ingested and keep records where possible.
